November 23, 2010 — Dover Senator Carper attended the grand opening and ribbon cutting of American Spirit Federal Credit Union's Dover location. Their second branch in Delaware, American Spirit is the first credit union approved to make guaranteed loans for the Small Business Administration in the state of Delaware. Having a Dover location means additional access to entrepreneurs to expand and open businesses. Nationally and in Delaware, credit unions are a growing part of the Small Business Administration's lending network. Sen. Carper will be joined by SBA District Director Jayne Armstrong, Dover Mayor Carleton Carey, Delaware State Senator Brian Bushweller, American Spirit CEO Maurice Dawkins and others. (three photos)
November 22, 2010 — Rehoboth Beach Senator Carper rang the bell for the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign at Wal-Mart in Rehoboth Beach. Last year more than $100,000 was raised through 15 Sussex County locations. The Red Kettle Christmas Campaign enables the Salvation Army to provide food, toys and clothing to over 6 million people during the Christmas season and helps more than 34 million Americans recovering from all kinds of personal disasters nationwide. November 22, 2010 — Selbyville Senator Carper joined volunteers to pack meal boxes for Mountaire Farms 16th Annual Thanksgiving for Thousands event. The boxes will help feed more than 45,000 individuals in Delaware and Maryland. Sixteen years ago, Mountaire partnered with Dagsboro Church of God to develop a new format for providing Thanksgiving dinner for Delmarva residents in need. That first year Mountaire and church volunteers prepared and distributed 90 boxes. On Monday, volunteers packed 6,600 boxes in Selbyville, the Oak Orchard American Legion Post 28 and the Hope & Life Outreach Ministries location in Salisbury. (three photos)
November 22, 2010 — Millsboro Senator Carper visited the Goodwill Industries retail store in Millsboro, one of eleven Goodwill retail locations in Delaware. Goodwill's philosophy of offering a "hand up and not a hand out" is evident at the store, which offers a bright, clean location for people to buy clothes and household goods, enabling them to take care of their families in a cost-effective, dignified way. November 9, 2010 — Wilmington Senator Carper. Lt. Governor Denn, Secretary of Education Lowery, Christina School District Superintendent Marcia Lyles, and Children & Families First announced major funding award from the U.S. Department of Education which will allow Children & Families First to build on its existing partnership with the Christina School District, as well as private funders, to implement Community Schools at Bancroft, Stubbs, and Elbert-Palmer Elementary Schools in the City of Wilmington. The three identified schools are Title I-eligible, serving approximately 900 students in grades K through 5 each year, in addition to 100 students to be served in Pre-K beginning this fall. The neighborhoods in the school feeder pattern face multiple challenges that negatively impact children's chances for success, including high rates of poverty and unemployment, and low rates of homeownership and educational attainment. November 9, 2010 — New Castle Senator Carper was joined by officials from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Delaware State Housing Authority and New Castle County to announce a $5 million award in federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program 3 funds to the State of Delaware. The event and check presentation was held in New Castle at a bank foreclosed property rehabilitated using Neighborhood Stabilization Program 1 funding. Members of the community were attendance and the home was open for tours. (two photos)
