Sen. Carper Lauds Senate Passage of Violence Against Women Act

Urges House to quickly approve critical legislation

WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement after the Senate passed the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (VAWA), which he cosponsored, by a vote of 78-22:

"Today's vote demonstrates yet again that the Violence Against Women Act is a commonsense, bipartisan piece of legislation that is a critical tool to help protect women and families across America. Unfortunately in the last Congress, the Senate approved this bill with broad bipartisan support, only to see it languish in the House of Representatives. I hope tonight's vote sends a clear signal that this measure deserves to be debated and voted on by the House sooner rather than later. Simply put, it's senseless to further delay the enactment of this bill, which would help keep many Americans safe from harm."
