Sen. Carper to Vote for Spending Bill to Fund Federal Government for Fiscal Year 2011

WASHINGTON – Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement regarding H.R.1473, legislation to fund the federal government through the end of Fiscal Year 2011. The funding bill passed the House today by a vote of 260 to 167, and it is expected to pass the Senate later today:

“I am not enamored with every provision of this spending bill, but at the end of the day this is what it took to get a bipartisan compromise to fund our government for the rest of the fiscal year. I am going to support this compromise because a government shutdown is not in the best interest of our country. The debate over the remainder of this year’s budget is a mere speed bump in comparison to the long-term fiscal challenges Congress must soon address. As we embark upon negotiations for the fiscal year 2012 budget and deficit reduction, I hope Congress will do away with political showmanship and instead redouble its efforts to reach bipartisan solutions that will restore order to our nation’s fiscal house.”
