President’s Budget Endorses Senator Carper’s Plan to Protect Military and Veteran Students

WASHINGTON- Today, Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), commended a proposal in the Obama Administration’s fiscal year 2016 budget to close a loophole that allows for-profit schools to be overly dependent on taxpayer dollars by recruiting military and veteran students. The approach mirrors legislation Senator Carper introduced in the 112th and 113th Congresses to close the “90/10 Loophole” and better align incentives so for-profit colleges better serve students and taxpayers.

“I was pleased the president’s budget recognizes the urgent need to close the 90/10 loophole, which currently allows for-profit schools to be 100 percent subsidized by taxpayers’ dollars. As I’ve said for years, this doesn’t make sense for taxpayers, and it doesn’t make sense for veterans. Closing the 90/10 loophole is a common sense approach that demonstrates we’re serious about improving educational opportunities for our veterans. Our nation’s veterans have sacrificed a great deal, and I plan on continuing to work with my colleagues and the administration to make sure every veteran gets the most out of their hard-earned G.I. Bill benefits.”

Sen. Carper introduced legislation in both the 112th and 113th Congresses to close the 90/10 loophole. He plans to reintroduce the Military and Veterans Education Protection Act in the 114th Congress.
