Carper Statement on Short-Term Highway Program Extension

WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement after the Senate extended the authorization of surface transportation programs to July 31, 2015, a proposal originally offered by Sens. Carper and Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.).

“The surface transportation authorization extension passed today will help to ensure that Congress keeps the critical conversation about the long-term solvency of the Highway Trust Fund on the front burner this summer,” Sen. Carper said. “I truly hope we use the next two months to find a bipartisan compromise to fund the long-term bill that cities, states and businesses need to plan for major upgrades to our roads, highways, bridges and transit systems. Now is the time to do the job that the American people sent us here to do and I won’t stop fighting for it until we do.”

Sen. Carper discussed the “stupid way” Congress has been funding transportation the past six years, his push for Congress to return to return to a more sensible way by completing a long-term bill this summer and the impact federal transportation funding has on Delaware.
