Senator Carper meets with Mexican Ambassador Gerónimo Gutiérrez

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), former chairman and ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and member of the Senate Finance Committee, met with Mexican Ambassador to the U.S. Gerónimo Gutiérrez.

During the meeting, Senator Carper and Ambassador Gutiérrez discussed immigration policy, security cooperation and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

“Ambassador Gutiérrez has an important and challenging role as Mexico’s top diplomat to the United States,” Senator Carper said. “Today we discussed the importance of working with our closest neighbors to modernize the North American Free Trade Agreement and in making continued progress in stemming Central American migration. We must continue working through today’s uniquely challenging political circumstances to uphold our country’s centuries-old relationship with one of our strongest global partners.

“Nearly one year ago today, I had the opportunity to sit down with leaders in Mexico and hear updates on their efforts to address the root causes of migration to the United States, including promoting economic opportunity, reestablishing rule of law, tackling violence and inspiring hope in the Northern Triangle,” Senator Carper continued. “Today Ambassador Gutiérrez reaffirmed Mexico’s commitment to working with the United States to support Central American countries’ efforts at continued reform. I look forward to continuing to work with his government, and those of our neighbors in Central America, to ensure continued progress through the Alliance for Prosperity.”

In October 2016, Senator Carper traveled to Mexico and met with key leaders to discuss U.S.-Mexico relations, the flow of Central American migrants through Mexico and issues concerning drug and human trafficking.
