Carper Statement on Exxon Mobil Climate Change Proposal

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), top Democrat on the Environment and Public Works Committee, released the following statement today about Exxon Mobil’s annual shareholder meeting.

“For years, I’ve said we do not have the luxury of ignoring that climate change is real and that it’s already happening. Today, the shareholders of one of the world’s largest producers of fossil fuels, Exxon Mobil, have recognized this very fact. This is a victory, and I hope it’s a sign that the small minority of people who remain unconvinced on this issue are ready to face reality.

“President Trump should take note of what happened today as he decides the fate of our country’s participation in the Paris Climate Agreement. Withdrawing our country from this historic accord would be a tremendous mistake – not only for our environment and public health, but also for our businesses and our continued economic recovery. We should seize the economic opportunities that come from combating climate change, not cede our role as a global leader.”
