Carper Announces New EPW Subcommittee Rosters

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), top Democrat on the Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, announced EPW subcommittee assignments for the second session of the 115th Congress.

“Together in our first year, our EPW members sent 40 requests for information to the Environmental Protection Agency as part of our oversight responsibility; helped to craft the Democratic blueprint for a $1 trillion federal investment in our nation’s infrastructure; hosted 5 public roundtables to discuss the state of our nation’s infrastructure, drinking water and air quality; and we held two unqualified nominees – Michael Dourson and Kathleen Hartnett White – accountable for their radical statements and years of work undermining public health protections,” said Senator Carper. “Our members remain committed to doing what we know is right, fighting to protect our bedrock environmental and public health protections and moving forward on efforts to make historic federal investments in our nation’s generations-old infrastructure. I am pleased that Senator Van Hollen has chosen to join our committee and add his thoughtfulness and experience to our ongoing work. And I am grateful to Senator Booker for bringing his passion to bear on our Superfund, Waste Management, and Regulatory Oversight Subcommittee as he leads our efforts to better protect every American threatened by these contaminated sites.”

“Roughly half of New Jerseyans live within three miles of a Superfund site, far higher than the national average,” Senator Booker said. “This is simply unacceptable, and too often – in New Jersey and across the country – those communities are comprised of low-income individuals and people of color.  I look forward to using my position on the subcommittee to address this issue and be a more forceful advocate for providing the EPA with the resources it needs to clean up these toxic sites. I’m also excited to join the Subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure. As the most densely populated state in the country, with the East Coast’s largest port, New Jersey’s transportation needs are enormous. I’ll use this new position to advocate for much needed investment in our crumbling roads, bridges, and water infrastructure.”

“Protecting Maryland’s waterways, like the Chesapeake Bay, is crucial to both our environment and our economy,” said Senator Van Hollen. “I’m pleased to join the Environment and Public Works Committee and to serve on the Fisheries, Water, and Wildlife and Superfund, Waste Management, and Regulatory Oversight subcommittees. I will keep fighting to hold the Trump Administration accountable on environmental issues and push Congress to act to combat climate change.”
