AUDIO: Ahead of America Recycles Day, Carper Urges Delawareans to Recycle

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ahead of America Recycles Day on Friday, November 15, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), co-founder of the Senate Recycling Caucus and top Democrat on the Environment and Public Works Committee, is encouraging Delawareans to recycle by spreading the word about the positive impact recycling has on economic growth and environmental quality.

“Hello, this is U.S. Senator Tom Carper. And I’m reminding you that this Friday, November 15th is America Recycles Day,” Senator Carper said. “Recycling is good for our economy and our environment – and it’s something we can do every single day! It’s an easy way that we can help keep our communities cleaner and healthier, too.”

According to the EPA, only 21 percent of recyclable waste is recycled. The American recycling industry is valued at approximately $200 billion, and it’s estimated that diverting 75 percent of U.S. waste from landfills and incineration to recycling by 2030 would create 2.3 million jobs. A recent study from the World Economic Forum predicts that unless our waste management and recycling methods change significantly, we are on track to have plastic pollution outweigh fish in our world’s oceans by 2050.

“We only have one planet. And with your help, America can lead the way in reducing, reusing and recycling,” Senator Carper continued. “So, let’s all get out there and recycle today and every single day!”

Senator Carper along with Senator John Boozman (R-Ark.) are co-chairs of the Senate Recycling Caucus, a group of 26 senators engaging with environmental and industry stakeholders to find ways the federal government can more effectively encourage responsible recycling practices throughout the country.
