Carper Statement on EPA Eroding Cost-Benefit Analysis in Rulemaking

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), top Democrat on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, released the following statement on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s final rule to erode the cost-benefit analysis it uses for regulations.

“In the face of a worsening climate crisis and deadly respiratory pandemic, the Trump Administration has repeatedly acted to put the wellbeing of polluters before human health and the environment. It is something that has become all too common over the past four years. When EPA announced plans to make this change in June, I called it out for what it was—a legally flawed effort to justify air pollution. Clearly, the administration has no intention of giving up in its war on science.

“In addition to undermining the essential work by career civil servants, changing EPA’s cost-benefit process is a waste of time and resources. President-elect Biden is committed to following science and making climate action a key focus of his presidency. I have no doubt that this rule will be reversed by the next administration.”
