Carper to Bring Delawarean and Vaccinator as Virtual Guest to Presidential Address

WILMINGTON, Del. – U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) has invited Claymont resident and ChristianaCare medical assistant Victor Hugo Castillo to join him as a virtual guest for President Biden’s address to the Joint Session of Congress on Wednesday evening, April 28, 2021.

Castillo, a medical assistant with ChristianaCare since 2018, has vaccinated hundreds of Delawareans against COVID-19, often going out into the community and educating patients about the vaccine. He continues to honor his father, who passed away from COVID-19 last year, through his work.

“If there’s one word I would use to describe my father, Victor Juan Castillo, it would be ‘hope,’ said Castillo. “He was a very positive person and he inspired me to find work where I can make a difference in people’s lives. That’s exactly why I chose to work in health care. I love being able to have one-on-one interactions with patients and I feel like I can make a positive difference in their lives, right then and there.  Last year, when the pandemic struck, I helped out by testing people in our community, and I recall seeing the fear in their faces when they came to me for help. This year, now that we have a COVID-19 vaccine, I’ve been able to vaccinate hundreds of people in our community. But there’s a difference when I look at their faces now. I no longer see fear – I see the look of hope. People are grateful to get the vaccine and they have hope for our future. It’s especially meaningful for me because my father died of COVID-19 only three days after being diagnosed with the virus last May. Helping people get vaccinated against COVID-19 is a way for me to carry on my father’s legacy of hope, and the American Rescue Plan Act gave us even more hope in our fight against COVID-19.”

“President Biden made a pledge that he would make vaccines available for all eligible Americans and he has followed through on that promise,” said Senator Carper. “Victor is one of so many Delawareans working every day to bring this pandemic to an end. I have hope, just like Victor, that together, we can put this pandemic in our rear-view mirror.”

Delawareans who want to sign up for a COVID-19 vaccine can do so by going to coronavirus.delaware.gov or by contacting the Delaware Public Health Vaccine Call Center at  (833) 643-1715 (select option 2 if you can’t access a computer or option 3 if you need an accommodation due to a disability), or email vaccine@delaware.gov
