Carper: Tonight is the Beginning, Not End, of Voting Rights Efforts

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), an original cosponsor of S. 1 – the For the People Act of 2021, released the following statement after the Senate voted to block debate on the legislation, which would protect voting rights and make other critical democracy reforms:

“In state legislatures across the country, a wave of restrictions are being enacted with the explicit purpose of making it harder, not easier, to vote. In response, the United States Senate has a moral obligation to address these brazen attempts to undermine confidence in our elections and suppress voter turnout. That’s why I’m proud to support the For the People Act, a comprehensive bill that protects the integrity of the ballot box and the right to vote. While I am disappointed in the Senate’s vote tonight against debating this strong measure, this is the beginning, not the end, of our efforts to protect voting rights. Our Senate colleagues must continue negotiating a path forward on legislation that protects the sanctity of the vote – the bedrock of our democracy.”
