Earlier this year, President Joe Biden released a transformational plan to modernize our nation’s infrastructure, create good-paying jobs, and combat the climate crisis. As Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, I’m pleased to share that we have taken action to deliver the first down payment on President Biden’s American Jobs Plan.

We voted recently to advance bipartisan legislation that would make historic investments in our highways, roads, and bridges. Our bill, the Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act, would reduce harmful pollution, improve roadway safety for our families, and expand economic opportunities for all Americans. If enacted, it would also be the first time that a transportation funding bill took action to address the climate crisis by investing in things like charging and fueling infrastructure for electric and clean energy vehicles. And, I’m glad to report that our bill received unanimous support from our committee—Republicans and Democrats alike. That’s something we don’t see nearly enough on Capitol Hill.

That bipartisan support is a testament to what I’m focused on in the Senate: working to find common ground so we can tackle the most pressing issues facing our nation. And, as many of you know, our infrastructure is certainly one of those matters where the government must take robust action. Our crumbling roads, bridges, and railways need more than just small repairs—we need serious investments to kick-start our economy and position our nation for the future.

That’s why it’s so critical that we carry out President Biden’s American Jobs Plan, starting with my bill. While our work doesn’t stop there, the first step in realizing the president’s vision is to ensure that our transportation programs run smoothly and work in the interest of the American people. That’s what we’ve done with our bill.

I will continue to keep you updated on the work that I am doing in Washington to help Delawareans and American across the country. Please don’t hesitate to reach out and let me know your thoughts.
