Today, we celebrate the remarkable life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – a civil rights champion who devoted his life to pursuing progress and working for justice for all Americans.
These last few weeks have been a trying time for our country, and it would be easy to become cynical. But, on this day especially, we should all take time to reflect on the goodness of Americans and the possibility of inspiring change. As we look ahead and work to find solutions, I am reminded of an important message from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: “The time is always right to do what is right.”
As we join together to honor a man who helped to usher our nation through a dark chapter, it’s a perfect time to remind ourselves of all of the things that unite us, rather than the things that drives us apart. Despite our differences, we are all Americans, and we can all work together to make real the words enshrined in our Constitution: to build an ever more perfect union.
Martin Luther King Jr. showed us one person has the power to make a profound difference in our community, in our city, in our country. On this day of service, please consider taking part in an activity that changes your community for the better and bring you closer to your neighbors.
As we begin this new year, let us honor Dr. King’s legacy – not just today, but every day – by striving to make his vision of peace and social justice a reality for all Americans.
