"Lessons from Fukushima One Year Later: NRC's Implementation of Recommendations for Enhancing Nuclear Reactor Safety in the 21st Century"
Mar 15 2012
10:00 a.m. | 406 Dirksen Senate Office Building | Washington, DC
U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-DE), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Clean Air and Nuclear Safety and U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chairman of the Committee on Environment and Public Works will convene a joint hearing to discuss the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's implementation of recommendations for enhancing U.S. reactor safety one year following the Fukushima nuclear emergency in Japan.
On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck Japan, resulting in complete loss of electrical power, damage to nuclear fuel, and release of radiation at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. In the aftermath of the disaster, the NRC formed a Task Force to reevaluate the safety and security of the nation's 104 nuclear power plants and develop a series of recommendations based on the lessons learned from Japan. The NRC must now issue orders, rules, and other actions to enhance reactor safety and protect public health.
