BACKGROUND: U.S. Senator Thomas R. Carper (D-DE), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Clean Air and Nuclear Safety, and U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chairman of the Committee on Environment and Public Works, will convene a joint hearing to review the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's near-term Task Force recommendations for enhancing reactor safety in the 21st century. The Committee will hear testimony from the Commission on the Task Force's recommendations, which were released in a July report, and their implementation following the nuclear emergency in Japan.
