Federal Financial Management Subcommittee Hearing

"Examining the President's Plan for Eliminating Wasteful Spending in Information Technology"

Apr 12 2011

Sen. Tom Carper, Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information, Federal Services, and International Security, will hold a hearing titled "Examining the President's Plan for Eliminating Wasteful Spending in Information Technology" on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. in room 342 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C.

The hearing will explore efforts by the Obama Administration to rein in the federal government's Information Technology (IT) budget, which surpasses $80 billion annually. Vivek Kundra, the nation's first Chief Information Officer, will deliver testimony on the President's 25-point plan to reform federal IT spending and management. The hearing will examine the progress being made on the plan's implementation, as well as discuss the federal IT community's response to the plan detailed in a survey by Meritalk.

"The conversation surrounding the budget this week has made one thing abundantly clear: we must cut what we can't afford. The President's plan to transform federal IT management should be a part of that conversation," said Sen. Carper. "In the past, too many federal IT projects have gone off-schedule, off-budget and have not delivered promised results. The consequence of this poor project management and oversight has involved tens of billions of lost taxpayer dollars and too many systems that don't meet agencies' needs. Given the $80 billion the government spends annually on IT and the critical role IT has in serving the needs of the American people, we simply can't afford for wasteful or inefficient practices to continue. I am hopeful about the progress that has been made on the implementation of the President's plan, and my aim is to determine how we can go even further to realize cost savings opportunities at a higher level of service for taxpayers."
