Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee Hearing
"Improving Educational Outcomes for our Military and Veterans"
Sep 22 2011
1:30 p.m. | 342 Dirksen Senate Office Building | Washington, DC
WASHINGTON – Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information, Federal Services, and International Security will hold a hearing titled "Improving Educational Outcomes for our Military and Veterans," on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. in room 342 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C.
The hearing will examine ways to incentivize non-profit and for-profit colleges to provide a better quality education to our nation's active duty military and our nation's veterans. Witnesses at the hearing will assess the 90/10 rule in place for for-profit schools and how it could be modified to better serve veterans and active duty military students. Furthermore, the hearing will identify cases of abuse of the Post-9/11 GI Bill by predatory schools and address ways to combat this abuse.
"We ask so much of our men and women in uniform and their families. It is important that we ensure that our service members and our veterans are receiving a quality, affordable education, and that the taxpayer dollars used to pay for that education are not being wasted," said Sen. Carper. "Recently, several reports have described troubling stories of how some schools have exploited our student veterans and military personnel. I believe we have a moral imperative and a financial imperative to ensure that the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Education are doing everything they can to prevent these kinds of abuses. I called attention to this issue at a hearing earlier this year. This hearing provides another opportunity for our subcommittee to examine the quality of education that our troops and veterans are receiving and how it can be improved. This will help us better protect not just our federal dollars, but also the well-being and future of our students."
