Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee Hearing

"Improving Financial Accountability at the Department of Defense"

Sep 15 2011

WASHINGTON – Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information, Federal Services, and International Security will hold a hearing titled "Improving Financial Accountability at the Department of Defense." The hearing will take place on Thursday, September 15, 2011, at 2:30 p.m. in room 342 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C. The hearing will examine the Department of Defense's internal auditing systems and accounting practices.

"We have known for years that the Department of Defense is unable to obtain an audit of its books and is woefully behind in meeting Congress' requirement that it be audit-ready by 2017," said Sen. Carper. "Adopting sound accounting and financial management practices is essential to preventing billions of dollars in waste and fraud, as well as ensuring that our military personnel are actually getting the critical supplies and services that they need to do their jobs and keep us safe. I look forward to hearing from the Department about the progress it has made in improving its accounting and inventory systems at this hearing."
