Wilmington — U.S. Sen. Tom Carper has been recognized by the American Lung Association for his work toward preserving lung health for Americans.

In a news release announcing the Healthy Air Hero award, Dr. Albert A. Rizzo, a pulmonary physician in Newark who serves as national volunteer chair of the lung association, said, "It is a special honor to present Sen. Tom Carper with this award for his heroic work to protect the nation's air quality. Senator Carper has been a longtime supporter and hero of the American Lung Association nationally and in Delaware."

Carper has run in the lung association's Caesar Rodney Half Marathon, held in Wilmington, for the last 30 years. Most recently, he was the honorary chairman for the marathon. He has also served as chairman of the subcommittee working for clean air and nuclear safety. One initiative he worked on during 2010 was the reinstatement of the Diesel Emission Reduction Program.
