Statements and Speeches

WASHINGTON – Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement today regarding the Supreme Court’s 6 to 3 decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act, preserving the health coverage tax credits provided to Americans in states with federally-run insurance marketplaces.

"The Supreme Court's decision confirms what we’ve long known – the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is constitutional and implementation of the law will continue. We have a moral obligation to the least of these in our society, and that includes trying to ensure all American families have access to the affordable health care they deserve. We have a fiscal obligation as a government to meet that moral obligation in a financially sustainable way. Doing that by providing tax credits to Americans on a sliding scale – a Republican proposal that many of my Republican colleagues have run away from in recent years – is a good idea and I’m glad the Supreme Court has embraced it. It's now time for the rest of us to do the same. I hope we can now move forward together to improve the ACA and strengthen our country's health care system."
