WASHINGTON – Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) joined a bipartisan, bicameral summit today at the White House, hosted by the President and Vice President, and including members of Congress, senior Administration officials, and experts in the economic field to discuss key fiscal issues facing the country.

Sen. Carper, Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information, Federal Services and International Security, told attendees that although the large stimulus package was necessary to help the economy recover by creating jobs, moving ahead, the government must now focus on fiscal responsibility and eliminating wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars.

As a result of congressional hearings he has held over the past years, Sen. Carper suggested several areas to examine, including closing the tax gap, recovering and eliminating improper payments made by government agencies, passing a line-item veto bill and disposing of unused federal property.
