WASHINGTON, DC - Senator Tom Carper today intervened to push through the Senate a Delaware native's nomination to be Assistant Secretary of Labor. John L. Henshaw, originally from Dover, was confirmed by the Senate today to head the Occupational Health and Safety Administration. Much of Henshaw's family still resides in Delaware. "It is a proud day for our state to see a native Delawarean confirmed as Assistant Secretary of Labor," Carper said. "John Henshaw brings with him to OSHA extensive real-world experience, a solid academic background and a real passion for the job." Henshaw's nomination was not originally scheduled to be heard by the Senate until sometime in the fall, after the Senate returned from its August recess. Carper intervened with the Senate leadership today to move the vote up and push it through the Senate. "I am glad that the Senate leadership was willing to move up this nomination. John impressed the Senate with his knowledge and experience. I am sure he will serve with the dignity and integrity for which he is known," Carper said. "John's family describes him as someone who shuns the limelight and is happiest when he's working hard. I intervened to move up his nomination because there is no reason to stop him from getting right to work." Henshaw previously worked for the Delaware State Board of Health in Dover and has held numerous positions over 26 years in the industry. He is the former Director of Environment, Safety and Health for Astaris LLC, was an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins, served on the EPA National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Board and the University of Michigan School of Public Health Alumni Board of Governors. He has served as President of the American Industrial Hygiene Association with over 12,000 members worldwide, and chaired the $1.5 million AIHAF National Endowment Campaign. His mother May Pisapia and sister Marilyn Woodhall live in Dover, while his sister Carol Russell lives in Bear. Henshaw's aunt Eleanor Masten lives in Clayton, and his niece Kimberly Deo lives in Hartley.
