Press Releases

WILMINGTON – Today, U.S. Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), top Democrat on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and a former Navy Captain, released the following statement on the agreement reached in Switzerland to end Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

"I welcome today's announcement that an agreement has been reached to peacefully end Iran's nuclear weapons program. I want to thank Secretary Kerry and commend our negotiating team for tirelessly leading the effort over the past few days, weeks and months on this high-stakes issue of national security.

"Some believe that no deal is the best deal. But I believe we must give peace a chance. As the president has said repeatedly, he will not be party to a bad agreement and, on first blush, this looks like a pretty good deal for the United States. It is not a deal based on trust – it is one based only on verification and one that becomes binding only if the Iranians hold up their end of the deal. Once we’ve had a chance to drill down on the details of the agreement, we may very well find that this is a very good deal for everyone."
