GEORGETOWN, DE - Senator Carper's Sussex County staff will join Monday with members of the community to continue work on the Habitat for Humanity home being built at Sussex Tech High School. After a successful afternoon spent building the home alongside students at the high school earlier this month, Senator Carper has inspired area leaders to get involved in the project. Leaders from area businesses, colleges, community centers, local media, law enforcement and elected officials are expected at the build. "Habitat for Humanity is a program aimed at giving families a hand up, instead of a hand out. The Sussex County chapter has a remarkable record for working within the community to find the folks who need the help and those who are willing to give it. Martha helped build a house a few years ago, and thought it was a great experience. I had to see for myself," Carper said. "I really wanted to set an example by being out there and to encourage people to volunteer their energies. Few things are as valuable a gift, or as rewarding to give. I am thrilled to see so many folks from the downstate community coming together to build partnerships." "The Senator really inspired us to get out there and make a difference. Watching him work with the kids made me eager to find others who wanted to volunteer as well," said Mark Lally, Senator Carper's Sussex County Director. "Folks in Sussex County really are unique- they are all out here, missing work today, to make a difference by enriching the community, one home and one family at a time." The house is being built on the grounds of the high school as part of year-long project integrated into the 11th grade carpentry curriculum. Upon completion, Ed and Pat Baker will make the house their home in Cabbage Corner. The Carper family continues to lead by example, and has inspired their staffers to volunteer their time to the house being built by the Sussex County Habitat for Humanity as well.
