Happy Presidents Day, Delaware!

Dear friend,

Today is Presidents Day, a day to commemorate those who have had the incredible task of leading our nation into the future. As a 23-year retired Navy captain, I know how important it is that our Commander-in-Chief demonstrate good judgment and lead by example. I also know how important it is that our president uplift those who serve our country, just as Franklin D. Roosevelt did when he signed the G.I. Bill into law. Like many veterans, this transformative legislation helped me get to where I am today, and for that, I will always be grateful.

During my time in Washington, D.C., I often start my days by running down to the National Mall to see the breathtaking Lincoln Memorial. When it comes to inspirational leaders, Lincoln is among the best. As he said many years ago, “I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended on to meet any national crisis.” I believe this quote still rings true now, especially as we face the ongoing threat of climate change.

Folks: our planet’s on fire. That’s the truth, and President Biden has taken historic action to address this threat to our one and only planet. Thanks in large part to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act, no other administration in our nation’s history has made more progress in the fight against climate change. Leadership makes a real difference, and I’m proud to continue my work with President Biden to make sure our children and grandchildren have clean air to breathe and a healthy planet to call home.

Throughout my time in public service, I have seen tangible results from presidential leadership. I saw President Clinton build a culture of national service and volunteerism when he started AmeriCorps 30 years ago. I saw President Obama make health care more accessible and affordable for millions of Americans when he signed the Affordable Care Act into law over a decade ago. And I’m seeing President Biden working hard to implement landmark pieces of legislation like the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that are a making a real difference for families all across the country. As we commemorate Presidents Day, let’s never forget the importance of leading by example and empowering the American people to thrive.

God bless,

Tom Carper
