Wishing you a happy, healthy 230th Delaware Day

History was made 230 years ago today, when a group of 30 elected delegates gathered at the Golden Fleece Tavern in Dover to debate and decide the fate of our state and country. After three days of deliberation, those delegates made the unanimous decision to ratify the U.S. Constitution and make Delaware the First State of what would eventually become our union.

Throughout Delaware’s unique history, our caring, welcoming community has endured, and each Delaware Day, I am excited to celebrate the dauntless spirit of the “Delaware Way.”

The “Delaware Way” means working together to continuously improve our state and our country. It also means caring for our neighbors as we care for our family. The Affordable Care Act allows us to care for our family, friends and neighbors by guaranteeing health care for every Delawarean and every American. Anyone who doesn’t get health insurance through their employer, Medicaid, Medicare or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is eligible for health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Eight out of 10 people qualify for financial assistance and many plans cost less than $100 a month.

Unfortunately, Open Enrollment for the Affordable Care Act health insurance marketplaces ends on December 15th – a little more than a week away. So, on this Delaware Day, I hope we will all be inspired by the “Delaware Way” and reach out to our friends, neighbors and co-workers to make sure that every one of them has health care in 2018.

Along with my partner in the Senate, Chris Coons, and Delaware’s Congresswoman, Lisa Blunt Rochester, we are working to spread the message that every Delawarean and every American has access to affordable health care for the new year. I hope you’ll join us and spread the word that the Affordable Care Act health insurance marketplace is open at healthcare.gov or choosehealthDE.com until December 15th only.

I wish you all a happy, healthy Delaware Day! God bless.
