Carper Applauds Appointment of Jack Markell as White House Operation Allies Welcome Coordinator

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), former Governor of Delaware, today issued the following statement on the appointment of former Delaware Governor Jack Markell as the point person on Afghan evacuee resettlement in the United States:

“I’m excited to hear that Jack Markell will be leading our nation’s efforts to resettle vulnerable Afghans, many of whom served alongside U.S. forces and have been our allies and partners for years. This is a vitally important task and I can think of no person better suited to meet the challenge,” said Carper. “One of my favorite Bible verses is Matthew 25: ‘when I was a stranger in your land, did you take me in?’ Our country has thrived and prospered from our rich history of taking in immigrants and those seeking refuge. Now, we can continue that proud tradition by welcoming these Afghan families with open arms and hearts — and in doing so, our nation will grow even stronger with their contributions to our communities. I’m confident Jack is the right person to lead that noble charge and I look forward to working with the administration in making this operation a success.”
