Carper Meets with Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), a senior member of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, met with the Juan Orlando Hernandez, President of the Republic of Honduras. Carper and President Hernández discussed the importance of supporting the work of the international anti-corruption commission in Honduras, as well as immigration issues, including the Trump Administration decision last month to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than 86,000 Hondurans who have lived in the U.S. since 1999 when a hurricane devastated their home country. 

“Honduras, like its neighbor countries in Central America’s Northern Triangle, has been plagued for years by violence and widespread crime. While progress has been made in recent years to reduce gang violence, improve the rule of law and address root causes of migration, considerably more work needs to be done to root out corruption and make needed economic reforms. I’m glad to have the opportunity to sit down with President Hernandez today to discuss ways we can continue working with Honduras and other Central American countries to strengthen and support our neighbors to the south, and I encouraged him to remain strongly committed to the difficult but necessary work of carrying out needed anti-corruption reforms.”
