Carper: On Voting Rights, Failure to Act is Not an Option

WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) today issued the following statement after voting to advance S.1, the For the People Act:

“We are at a critical time in our nation’s history in which the right to vote—the bedrock of our democracy— is under attack, and how Congress responds to this moment is under the careful watch of the American people. I continue to believe that Congress must pass the For the People Act in response to the wave of voter suppression laws being enacted in state legislatures across the country. However, early this morning, my Republican colleagues once again blocked the Senate from even debating this legislation to protect the integrity of the ballot box and the right to vote. In the weeks ahead, my Senate colleagues will be working to chart a path forward, but, make no mistake, failure to act is not an option.”
