Carper Speaks to Students at Delaware’s 1st Annual Youth Environmental Summit

DOVER, Del. — Today, at Delaware’s first annual Youth Environmental Summit (YES!) hosted at the Del Tech Conference Center, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), top Democrat on the Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW), encouraged a packed room of 150 Delaware students to continue raising awareness, creating momentum and leading the climate movement

In his remarks, Senator Carper encouraged students to continue mobilizing their generation to speak truth to power about the threat of climate change. “The leader that you’re looking for in your life is sitting in your chair,” he said in his remarks, emphasizing the importance of youth leadership to address in the climate crisis.

“We have a generation of young people holding Congress accountable to ensuring we all have clean air to breathe and safe water to drink, no matter where we live in America,” Senator Carper said later in a statement. “When I look at these students, I see great leaders—and I feel confident that America will once again lead the fight against the climate crisis.”

Senator Carper also spoke about the Clean Economy Act, his legislation with 33 senators that would put our country on an aggressive yet achievable path to meet net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by no later than 2050.

YES! is a wide collaborative partnership of Delaware nonprofit organizations, educators, agencies, businesses, and students who want to make a difference by engaging Delaware’s youth in issues and advocacy on environmental issues.
