Senator Carper Statement on Resignation of Speaker Boehner
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement today regarding the resignation of House Speaker John Boehner:
“John Boehner has been my friend for many years, and I will miss working with him. I respect the decision he’s made and I’m happy he is at peace with it. We had a lot of differences on policy, but he was always willing to discuss them, and I could always count on him to be straight with me. He was a pragmatic thinker who worked incredibly hard to serve the people who sent him to Washington to lead and make difficult choices. A smart man once said, ‘leadership is about having the courage to stay out of step when everyone else is marching to the wrong tune.’ John has shown a lot of courage, and I have huge respect for him as a leader.
“John is a man of deep faith, and yesterday one of his dreams came true as he welcomed Pope Francis to Congress. From humble beginnings outside of Cincinnati, his hard work drove him all the way to the Speaker’s office in the House of Representatives – he embodies the American dream. But most important, he is a man who loves his wife, Debbie, their two daughters, and his new grandchild. I wish them all the very best as he ends his tenure in the House.”
