Carper Statement on Second Vote Against Proceeding to McConnell Transportation Bill

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) issued the following statement tonight after voting against cloture on H.R. 22, the legislative vehicle for a highway bill.

“My opinion on how to address authorizing and funding our country’s transportation system remains unchanged from yesterday, and that’s why I voted against cloture again this evening. We can do more to keep Americans safe, we can make a better investment in our country’s roads, highways, bridges and transit systems, and ‎we can pay for these things through a more fiscally responsible approach.

“However, I’m heartened by the great number of my colleagues who are dedicated to giving our city, state and local governments the long-term bill they’ve been asking us to pass for years. As we move forward, it’s my sincere hope we can work together and make improvements to the deal that’s been presented so we can help to build a transportation system worthy of this country.”
