Carper Statement on Trump Postal Task Force Recommendations

WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), a senior member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC), released the following statement regarding the Treasury Department’s proposed recommendations to reform the United States Postal Service. 

“The long-term viability of an American institution that ensures each and every home, regardless of its zip code, receives its mail, is an incredibly important issue that all of us should care about. In April, I welcomed the President’s engagement on this time-sensitive issue. However, for the better part of 2018, the President’s task force has been crafting recommendations in secret that the public has only just seen today. Again, I am always glad to have more people involved and working to solve this imminently fixable problem, and Presidential leadership could help us finally enact meaningful legislation to bolster the Postal Service. But I believe we need to be working together in a transparent way and building off legislation that is the result of years of hard work and scrutiny to address the Postal Service’s immediate challenges. We know that the Postal Service’s financial situation is in a downward spiral. We know we need to act now, and I would like to get to work putting much needed reforms, like those that have bipartisan support in the House and Senate, into place.”
