Carper Votes For Sonny Perdue to Lead U.S. Department of Agriculture

WASHINGTON—Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), released the following statement after voting for Sonny Perdue to head the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

“President Trump’s budget blueprint puts a whopping 21 percent of the USDA’s budget on the chopping block. From the rural communities struggling to combat the opioid epidemic, to the small towns relying on USDA grants to complete water and wastewater projects, the impact of the president’s budget proposal would cut deep and do real harm across the Delmarva region. We can’t allow rural America to be left behind by the Trump administration. Now, perhaps more than ever, we need an advocate for farming families and rural communities at the helm of USDA. We need leadership that will support the agriculture industry through international trade, by breaking down unfair trade barriers and helping farmers access new markets.

“As the former governor for Georgia, a state with an economy fueled by its agriculture sector, Sonny Perdue is the right choice for this role. He understands the needs of our rural communities, and he appreciates the contributions of our country’s farmers and poultry producers to our economy.
