ICYMI: Carper to Congress: Raise the Gas Tax

WASHINGTON – Yesterday, after the Senate took another procedural vote on transportation legislation, Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) took to the floor to encourage his colleagues in Congress to raise gas and diesel taxes to shore up the Highway Trust Fund. Senator Carper offered amendments to the legislation currently before the Senate that would raise the country’s gas and diesel taxes and index them to inflation, but neither has received a vote.

“I think the last time we raised the federal gas tax was 1993,” the Senator said. “Since that time, the cost of asphalt, the cost of concrete, the cost of labor, the cost of steel have all gone up. But the user fee, the gas tax and the diesel tax have not gone up at all.”
