Carper Statement Following President’s Speech

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Tom Carper today issued the following statement following the President’s speech: “As the United States grapples with the threat posed by Iraq, we must work together with the international community through the United Nations. In addition, the President must, as he has indicated he will, seek authorization from Congress in the event we initiate military action. The world’s objective is not just inspections, but eliminating any weapons of mass destruction from Iraq. We should work with the United Nations to pass a resolution requiring Iraq to admit weapons inspectors, allow them to conduct unfettered inspections and destroy any weapons of mass destruction they uncover. If Iraq again refuses, the United Nations must be prepared to enforce its resolutions.”
