Delaware Congressional Delegation Announces $13 Million Homeland Security Grant

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senators Joe Biden and Tom Carper and Congressman Michael N. Castle today announced that Delaware is set to receive nearly $13.73 million from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to help prepare the state for possible terrorist attacks and other emergencies. The funds will go to the Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), the office charged with implementing the state’s homeland security strategy. DEMA can use the money to help purchase emergency responder equipment and help train personnel to deal with potential chemical, biological, nuclear and traditional explosive attacks. States may also use a portion of the money to reimburse costs incurred protecting critical infrastructure during periods of heightened security alert. “We have a responsibility to ensure that the first-responders are well-prepared to handle whatever crisis arises,” said Senator Biden. “The federal government must do whatever it can to ease that financial burden placed on the states.” “This money will help Delaware prepare against possible terrorist attacks here at home,” said Carper. “While we would all like to see the federal commitment for homeland security increase, this money will certainly help our local firefighters, police officers, medical personnel and others get the equipment and training they need to protect the state in the future.” This important federal commitment will help the State of Delaware and local agencies to implement necessary security measures,” said Rep. Castle. “The funding will provide first responders with critical resources and training to bolster public health and homeland security.”
