Delaware Delegation Applauds Department Of Energy’s $529 Million Loan To Fisker Automotive
WASHINGTON – Delaware’s Congressional Delegation, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), Sen. Ted Kaufman (D-Del.) and Rep. Mike Castle (R-Del.) released the following statement in response to the announcement today that the Department of Energy has closed on a $528.7 million loan for Fisker Automotive for the development and production of two lines of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV):
“The last few years have been very challenging as Delawareans worked to recover from the weak economy. The closure of the General Motors and the Chrysler plants, and the good jobs lost as a result, were particularly painful for the First State given our rich automotive history. But in the face of adversity lies opportunity and Fisker Automotive’s decision to re-open the General Motors plant to produce the next generation of fuel efficient electric vehicles right here in Delaware is a terrific opportunity. Not only is Delaware set to benefit from the over 2,000 jobs that will be created at the plant but we will once again be leaders in designing some of the world’s most innovative cars. Fisker Automotive is one of the most pioneering new business ventures in the United States and today’s announcement from the Department of Energy confirms just how compelling their business model and their vision for the future of American automaking is. We are thrilled by the progress this venture is making and look forward to the day when we will see the first Fisker cars roll off the assembly line at the Boxwood Plant.”
