Sen. Carper Commends NRC As Best Place To Work In Federal Government

WASHINGTON – Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) today congratulated the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for, again, been ranked as the top place to work among large federal agencies. The NRC survey results improved by more than five percent to enable the commission to receive this top ranking for an unprecedented two consecutive years.

Sen. Carper said:

“If we are to meet our nation’s energy and climate goals, safe nuclear power must be part of our energy mix and the NRC will play a crucial role in making this nuclear renaissance happen.

“As Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Work’s Clean Air and Nuclear Safety Subcommittee, I am committed to helping the NRC stay focused on a safe, secure use of nuclear technology – for energy as well as medical and other commercial uses that benefit the citizens of our country.

“The NRC’s dedicated staff share my commitment to the highest standards of safety and security at our nation’s nuclear power plants. Now, more than ever, a capable and conscientious NRC is critically important. The safety of the 104 U.S. nuclear reactors and other nuclear facilities in operation today must remain the NRC’s top priority.

"I commend the past Chairman, Dr. Klein, for his leadership and efforts. I also look forward to working with the newly named NRC Chairman, Chairman Jaczko, along with the other commissioners. We will work together as our nation moves toward a new generation of nuclear reactors, while still maintaining the highest level of safety at our existing facilities.”

The 2009 Best Places to Work in the Federal Government rankings were announced today by the Partnership for Public Service and the American University Institute for the Study of Public Policy Implementation.

The NRC was established by the Energy Reorganization Act of 1974 to license and regulate the civilian use of nuclear materials to protect public health and safety and the environment.
