Sen. Carper Highlights First-Ever Small Business Saturday This Weekend

WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) encouraged Delawareans to participate in the first-ever Small Business Saturday on Nov. 27, 2010. Much like the holiday retail traditions of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday is a day to celebrate the very businesses that boost our local economies and encourage shoppers to utilize these neighborhood retailers.

"Small businesses are the cornerstone of the American economy, so it is imperative that we do everything we can to help them recover from the recession," said Sen. Carper. "Small Business Saturday is a great opportunity for consumers to directly contribute to our economic recovery by investing in local industries and independently-owned businesses, and I encourage all Delawareans to keep this in mind as they embark on their holiday shopping."

Prior to Small Business Saturday, the holiday shopping season traditionally kicked off with Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, and later, with the rise in Internet sales, Cyber Monday.  According to the National Retail Federation, roughly 195 million people shopping in stores and online spent more than $41 billion during the four-day weekend following Thanksgiving in 2009. These national shopping days target national chains and online retailers. The goal of Small Business Saturday is to drive sales to independently-owned businesses.
