Senator Carper: Bush Plan Might Not Add Up

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Thomas R. Carper (D-DE) today praised President Bush for his speech before Congress but expressed concerns about the details of the President’s plans. As Governor of Delaware, Carper learned the difference between details and rhetoric in the budget process. He balanced eight budgets and cut taxes seven years in a row. “Sometimes, when things seem too good to be true, they are,” Carper said. “The President tonight promised to cut taxes by almost two trillion dollars, to pay down our national debt and to increase our domestic spending for education and our military. My fear is it just does not add up. I look forward to seeing the details of the President’s full budget and tax plan in April to see if he can actually make it work.”
