Sen. Carper Awarded Coastal Advocate of the Year

WILMINGTON – Last night, U.S. Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) was presented with the Coastal Advocate of the Year Award from the American Shore and Beach Protection Association (ASBPA) for his work protecting and preserving coastal resources in Delaware and the nation.

The ASBPA is a non-profit that works to educate public leaders, scientists, engineers, planners and the public of the damage to our coastlines caused by erosion and how we can preserve, protect, and enhance the beaches, shores and other coastal resources. The Coastal Advocate Award is ASBPA’s highest award, given for a lifetime of achievement as an advocate for protecting and preserving coastal resources.

“Our nation’s coasts are a precious economic and environmental resource and it is vital that we act as good stewards to protect and preserve them for generations to come,” said Sen. Carper. “Delaware’s coast supports our economy in many ways including tourism, transportation, shipping and fishing. It also provides an essential habitat for countless species and an important barrier that helps protect our coastal communities from storms. Striking a balance between economic development and environmental protection for Delaware’s coast has been a guiding principle that has proven successful for the First State, and I hope our approach can be a model for other coastal states.”
