Sen. Carper Commends Finance Committee for Approving Burwell for HHS

WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, released the following statement after the committee approved the nomination of Sylvia Mathews Burwell to be Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:

“During this critical period for the Department of Health and Human Services, it is imperative that we have an individual with tremendous leadership and vision to navigate the continued implementation of the Affordable Care Act and the advancement of American’s health and quality of life. Ms. Burwell’s proven leadership and rich background in both the public and private sectors make her an excellent choice to guide the department moving forward.

“Ms. Burwell has shown a tremendous work ethic and an ability to build bipartisan consensus, as she did when she played an instrumental role in navigating the return from the government shutdown and reaching a bipartisan budget this past December.

“I’m glad the committee had the good sense to recognize the same exceptional leadership skills in Ms. Burwell that I did in my time working with her while she served as director of the Office of Management and Budget. I look forward to seeing that she has a swift confirmation by the full Senate.”
