Sen. Carper Commends the Laurel Softball Team World Championship Win at Town Celebration

LAUREL, Del. – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) congratulated the 14 members of the Laurel Senior League Softball team, along with Manager Brad Lee and Coaches Bo Collins and Kevin Green, on winning the Senior League Softball World Series on Aug. 13, 2011. The town of Laurel celebrated the team’s win with a block party.

In its 38th year, the Senior League Softball Little League division for girls ages 14 to16 is a worldwide tournament with teams traveling from as far away as Italy and the Philippines. The Senior League Softball World Series has been held for eight years in Sussex County. As the host, Delaware’s top team gets a berth in the tournament and Laurel has captured that spot seven of the past eight years. This was the team’s first Championship win, defeating Latin America 2-0.

Sen. Carper presented team members with a Congressional Record Statement congratulating the young women on their achievement.

“Today, we congratulate the Laurel Senior League Softball team, Manager Lee, and Coaches Collins and Green,” said Sen. Carper. “They made their dreams come true, accomplished something that no other Delaware team has done, and they made each one of us very proud. Their win is an example of the success that comes from hard work, perseverance, teamwork, dedicated coaching, and the support of community, parents, and fans.”
