Sen. Carper Hails Interior Decision to Award First “Smart from the Start” Lease to NRG Bluewater Wind

Decision Marks a Significant Step Forward for Offshore Wind Deployment Off of Delaware's Coast

WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) hailed the Department of Interior’s announcement that Bluewater Wind is qualified to acquire a lease through a noncompetitive process on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). The decision allows the company to move forward with the federal leasing process to build off-shore wind power along the coast of Delaware. This is the first lease awarded under the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement’s (BOEMRE) new “Smart from the Start” Atlantic Offshore Wind program.

“This is exciting news for Delaware and the future of off-shore wind power in our nation,” said Sen. Carper. “This is a win-win-win for Delaware as we stand to increase good paying jobs, gain energy independence, and help protect our environment by harnessing offshore wind power. I want to thank the Obama Administration and Governor Jack Markell for their leadership on this effort. Today’s announcement means we are even closer to developing offshore wind power off the coast of Delaware. I hope the remaining leasing procedures go quickly and smoothly, enabling the project to move into the construction phase. I stand ready to work with them to encourage the development of clean, renewable energy sources.”
