Sen. Carper Statement on January Jobs Report

WASHINGTON – Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement regarding January employment figures released today:

“The report of today’s encouraging jobs numbers is welcome news. The fact that our economy added a total of 243,000 jobs in January is another good sign that the recovery from the worst recession since the 1930s is taking hold. I am hopeful that these jobs numbers – in addition to other encouraging economic indicators we have seen in recent months – show that employers are gaining the confidence they need to accelerate hiring in the months ahead. Having said that, the unemployment rate remains stubbornly high, and we must remember that there is still more work to do.

“As I have said before, this economic recovery is being led by different sectors of our economy than past recoveries, particularly the manufacturing sector. I am heartened by the fact that we are building things in America again, and this is reinforced by the 50,000 manufacturing jobs added this month. The manufacturing jobs are the most created in this sector in a year and builds on 29 consecutive months of growth.

“While this is positive news, we have to continue our efforts to help get our friends and neighbors get back to work. We must continue to implement policy at the state and national level to provide a nurturing environment for job creation, giving businesses in Delaware and across America the certainty and predictability they need to expand and invest in a world class American work force.”
