Sen. Carper statement on the passing of the Honorable Murray Schwartz

WILMINGTON – Today, U.S. Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) expressed his sympathy to the family and friends of retired U.S. District Judge Murray M. Schwartz:

“I was saddened to learn today of the passing of retired U.S. District Judge Murray Schwartz.  Good leaders are those who have the fortitude to make decisions that are not necessarily the most popular at the time, and during his career, Judge Schwartz often marched in the other direction when everyone else was moving the wrong way. He showed courage through his forward-thinking and controversial rulings on free speech and perhaps most famously, desegregation of Wilmington’s schools. Our nation needs more leaders like Judge Schwartz. He will be remembered for his political courage through some of the most divided times in our state and nation’s history and for that, we should all be grateful.”
