Senator Carper Congratulates Sen. Max Baucus on Ambassadorship, Thanks Him for Service to Montana and the Senate

Washington, DC – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), released the following statement after the Senate approved the nomination of Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), to be the U.S. Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China:

“Senator Baucus has been a key leader in the Senate for more than 35 years and a dedicated public servant to the state of Montana for more than four decades. I’ve been fortunate enough to work alongside him over the past 13 years and I’m honored to call him a friend. Max’s leadership on the Senate Finance Committee has been vitally important to many of the most important issues to come through Congress, including healthcare reform, tax policy, and free trade agreements. Max’s relationships with members on the other side of the aisle set an example for us all on how principled compromise can work for the greater good. He leaves behind a wonderful legacy of service in the Senate and to the state of Montana, but ahead of him lies a tremendous new challenge, one that I know he is well prepared to meet. I look forward to working with him as ambassador, but for now, as we say in the Navy, I say, ‘Fair winds and following seas.’”
