Senator Carper Statement on Senate Dismissal of Impeachment Against Secretary Mayorkas

Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement after the Senate voted to dismiss the two articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

“Despite many Congressional Republicans’ best efforts to undermine the serious nature of impeachment proceedings, today the U.S. Senate voted to dismiss the charges against Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In doing so, we maintained impeachment as an offense reserved for ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’ as our Founders intended, not political stunts or disagreements on policy.

“Secretary Mayorkas is a thoughtful and deeply principled public servant. While House Republicans insisted on pursuing these unprecedented, baseless, and rightfully dismissed charges, Secretary Mayorkas remained steadfast in his commitment to working with Congress in a bipartisan manner. This was exemplified through his role in the months-long negotiations with a bipartisan group of senators to craft the strongest border security bill in decades.

“Now that we have put this to rest, it’s time to hit the reset button and focus on serving American families and working together in good faith – Democrats and Republicans – to tackle the most pressing issues at our border.”
